I was thinking this morning about my favorite moment in Michigan sports. And I said to myself, "Self, what is the other MSS listeners, and pod jocks, favorite live sports moment. If the "Live" is not clear enough, I want to know what game you went to that you will never forget and why. Mine came on May 11, 2007 when I got to take my daugher, Alexis, on her 7th birthday to see the Tigers and Twins at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. During batting practice, we were behind the player and I was pointing out to her the different player. I said to her, "there is Pudge, and there is Curtis Granderson, and there is the manager Jim Leyland." He must have heard me, becasue he turned around, saw us in our Tigers shirts, and waved at her. The look in her eyes was a look of joy, and after that, anytime there there was a baseball game on, she would see if it was the Tigers, and if it was, she'd yell at me no matter what I was doing. She will then specifically look for Leyland, and say there is the coach...he waved at me. It is very cool. That is my favorite "live" moment. How about you?

This is a toughy for me ... as I have been lucky enough to be at two amazing games that turned out to be momentous Detroit sports moments.
... I was at round 2 game 7 of the Wings / Blues series in 1996. The game where it was tied 0-0 going into double OT ... and Yzerman scored the series winning goal off a turnover by Gretzky. Not only did it propel Yzerman to "god status" in my eyes ... it also is where I became a HUGE Osgood fan ... because he made some amazing saves in that game to save the season.
Being there at the rink was amazing and seeing the pure joy on Yzerman's face as well as the faces of all the fans was a moment I'll never forget.
... I was at game 4 of the 2006 ALCS where Mags hit the 3 run walk off homer in the 9th! In this game ... I got to experience the thrill of a walk off home-run for the first time in my life and it was the homerun that sent the Tigers to the World Series.
Getting to experience that game with my best friends (my brothers really) probably makes that game my favorite. When Mags hit that homerun it was pandemonium ... and all I remember doing is screaming, jumping, and making sure Dustin didn't kill himself in a fit of joy. And you think the Joe went bonkers after the goal ... Comerica Park blasted off after that home run. It was INSANE.

This is actually a tougher one then I thought it would be. Being at game 4 of the ALCS in 2006 to see Mags blast that walk-off homer was a moment I can't even describe. As a lifelong Tigers fanatic, to be able to see them win the pennant...I still get choked up just thinking about it.
Another great memory was my first Tigers game at old Tiger Stadium. I'm not sure how old I was but I was pretty young. My dad took me to see the boys play Kansas City and began my love affair with the kitties. The Tigs lost 6-4 but it was still a great day. My dad took a hat he bought me at the game and wrote "First Tigers game Dad and Dusty (whatever the date was) Tigers 4 Royals 6" under the bill. I still have that hat and hope to someday do the same for a son of my own.
In the end the Mags homer probably wins...I've never felt that much joy in my life...but the first game with my dad takes a close second.

This is a tough one for me. There are 3 that stand out for me, only 2 of which are Michigan sports related. Here they are in no particular order.
1) I think it was 96 (the 2nd year the Stars were in Dallas) and it was near the end of regular season and I went to see the Wings play Dallas in the old Reunion Area (right down the street from the old Sportitorium for all you old school wresting fans) with my Dad and my uncle. We were sitting in the very top row right behind the goal and I was wearing my Federov jersey. Anyway the the Wings were up 3-2 in the closing minutes of the 3rd period, when they gave Dallas a penalty shot with just under a minute to play. I was hearing it from all the Stars fans and the place was going crazy in anticipation of the penalty shot. So while they are sorting everything out, I remember seeing Osgood and Paul Coffey standing around the crease just creating as much snow as they can from the ice. It looked pretty think. The Stars player comes down (Gagne, I think) to take the shot and right when it goes to make is move in front of Osgood, the puck gets stuck in the snow and he loses control. Osgood covers up the puck and the Wings go on to victory.
2) This was my freshman year at Baylor University (Sic'em Bears!!!), and a bunch of us went to go see the Baylor/Texas Tech basketball game. With about 15mins left in the game, Baylor was down 18 points, and we decided that if the Tech lead got to 20 we were heading out. The lead never made it to 20 and Baylor slowing started to chip away at the leaduntil finally with about a minute left, some one from Baylor tied the game with 2 free throws and then short after took the lead with a break away dunk. My Baylor friends and I still refer to that game as "The greatest comeback of all time", even though it probably wasn't.
3) Last year, 1st round Game 5 against Calgary at the Joe. This was my first Red Wings game at Detroit. That morning my girlfriend and I left Chicago head to Detroit. Thanks to some crappy map quest directions we made a few wrong turns and just made it to our seats just before the introductions were made. I was in my Red Yzerman jersey and she was in my Red blank juersy, because I would not let her wear her McCarty jersey since he was playing for Calgary. The seats we had were near the top about 2 row in front of Darryl Sutter and the rest of Calgary front office. As soon as I got the tickets I was worried about driving 5 hrs to Detroit only to watch them lose, luckily I was not disapointed. It was awesome to be part of the home crowd for a change. I remember jumping up and down and high fiving everyone around me when Cleary put home that penalty shot to open up the scoring and begin the blow out. And then as Calgary started to goon it up toward the end of the game, it was great to listen to everyone in the building tearing into Sutter and just see him sitting there not changing the expression on his face, but you could tell the guy was fuming. It was a great game to be at.
As Detroit fan in Chicago, it is always nice to hear about Detroit sports. Keep up the good work.

I've got a few good ones. Actually, three. Two of them are the pros, and one is ACHA hockey.
3) I went to this year's GLI Championship Game, where Michigan and Michigan tech took two overtimes to decide it. Michigan won the game 1-0, and Billy Sauer made 50 saves in the shutout effort. Nothing beats continuous OT, and you play until someone scores. It is drama!
2) I went to game 3 of the 2006 ALDS, against the Yankees...because I was afraid the Yankees would sweep us, and if I got game 4, I wouldn't get to go. It feels good to tell the truth. We won by something like 8-0, with Kenny Rogers pitching 7.1 scoreless innings (my buddy kept score, and gave me the scorecard after the game). Between the 7th and 8th innings, we all knew we were going to win, and everyone was festive (except the drunk Yankees chicks who spilt a beer on my coat, who were sitting behind us), and they played "Shout!" on the PA. I got up and started dancing, and then I noticed the hot dog vendor was dancing. So, we put our arms over each others' shoulders and started dancing and swaying back and forth. It was so much fun, and people must've thought we were totally smashed. I mean, MY COAT SMELLED OF BEER! And then, everybody was high-fiving everybody out front of the CoPa, on the way out. It was so cool.
1) But, my very favorite moment came two weeks ago. It was the day that set up the game, and then the ending. I was broadcasting the women's basketball game for Michigan-Dearborn at 1:00 (Saturday the 9th). We called the game, and then went back to the station to watch Hockey Day in Canada (Wings v. Toronto). There were six of us crowded around a 9" TV. After the game, we went to B-Dubs for a pregame meal (I was doing color-commentary for the final Michigan-Dearborn hockey game of the year), and I had to have a traditional pint of Woodchuck (it just goes with hockey). So, we shlep on back to the ice arena, me partially inebriated, and get ready to call the game. Our record was 5-26-2, and we allowed at least three goals to every team that year. It was Senior Night, and our senior (with just two starts, and a +6.00 GAA), Nick Hill, started the game, and shut Eastern Michigan out for half of the game, until they scored at 10 minutes of the 2nd. Their goalie, Rob Cupit (who played for us at the beginning of the year, until he trumped up an injury, transferred to EMU and was miraculously "better") got the start, because their usual starter threw out his back, the night before. They took the lead to the 2nd intermission, and I made note, on air, that we had never come back from being down after two periods. They were shutting us out 1-0, with under 4 minutes left, when one of our freshmen, Matt "Kegger" McCaig, banged home the rebound, prompting my broadcast partner to exclaim, "Woozy-Wam-Wam-Wazzle!" We take two late penalties, and have to kill off a 1:30 5-on-3. We do that and take it to overtime. A minute in, our assistant captian, senior, and top scorer, Matt Chromy, takes a slapper from the left faceoff circle, and scores the game-winner. The place erupts. The Wolf Pack (student cheering section) rushes the ice and mobs the team. I got to do the postgame interviews. It was a magical intoxicating brew of joy and relief. It was just so cool for it to all happen that way.
Okay, so it was a little long-winded, but it was worth it. I wish you could have been there. If you want to hear it, go to www.WUMDSports.org, enter the site, click on hockey, and go to the 42 minute mark of the audio track (about 4 minutes left).

THE GLI has always been one of the things I would like to go to ever since I started watching it on PASS when I was living in Texas. College Hockey is something I have been trying to make an effort to watch more of. THis year I made the trip up to Madison, WI to watch Brenden Smith and the Wisconsin Badgers take on Michigan Tech. It was a really fun game and watching the student section and listening to their different cheers was almost worth the price of the tickets alone.

I've actually attended a UofM Wolves hockey game ... I think I was about 10 years old and my brother-in-law's brother was on the team.

One of the places I want to go is to Yost Arena and check out some Wolverine Hockey. I went there when my best friend and I went to see Michigan Football against Miami of Ohio. Fun game, I was 4 rows from the field. I saw Mercury Hayes make a one handed catch in the endzone...it was cool.
