After playing it over Thanksgiving and again over Christmas we took the plunge and bought a Wii. Since neither of us are hard core gaming folks, I think this will work out well for us. Plus, I hope to watch the Red Wings on my TV when they are being streamed online.
Anyway, I need some games to try out. I'm already planning on getting Mariocart once I can find in the store. I think I am going to hold off on getting either Guitar Hero or Rockband for the Wii for now. Any other good suggestions?
It looks like I am half way to becoming one of you guys.

First of all, congrats on the purchase. Second, I have to say that Zelda isn't fun. All the other games that Derek mentioned are fantastic though.
Considering that my sister just got a Wii for Christmas (she's 11 by the way), I've been the go-to-guy for family-type games.
So if that's the route you're going, here are the MUST-haves...
1. Wii Play (a no-brainer since it comes with another controller and some pretty good mini-games)
2. Mario Galaxy is the best 1-player experience on the thing. Anyone can get into it, but it's really just an amazing game. I can't say enough about it.
3. Dr. Mario Wii Ware downloadable ($10) This is a great puzzle game that my girlfriend and I play a lot, and I usually get my ass handed to me. It's still fun though.
4. Boom Blox is a family/party game masterpiece. I don't know why the big sites and magazines don't push it more.
Other than that, there are some games out there that are really nice, but have to do with personal taste..
Smash Bros. is fun, but as Derek has already stated, the online mode is nearly worthless.
I just didn't like Zelda on the Wii. If you wanna play a Zelda game, get A Link To The Past on Virtual Console. It's a much better game, and I can't think of a soul that wouldn't recommend it.
Rock Band is great if you've got the cash. Plus they've got DLC coming this year, so that's something to look forward to. I wouldn't get it for the Wii though personally, since DLC is such a huge factor in the game. Sure you can get expansion discs, but do you really want ALL of those songs for another $30 a pop? Probably not.
People swear up and down that Okami is great (as a 1-player experience), but I've never picked it up. Also, echoing Derek yet again, RE4 is fantastic. To round out the 1-player stuff, people tell me that No More Heroes is great, but I haven't popped that one in yet. Or Zack and Wiki for that matter...
Mario Kart is one of those games that if you've got a family I could see it being the centerpiece of your Wii collection. Wil's probably the king of that game and could tell you more than I can, but it's fun other than the fact that the AI in the game cheats worse than I did in high school. But if it's a family affair, the AI isn't really a factor.
We really should update the main site with game suggestions for each system. Once we get the show back up and running I'll make sure I put something like that together. One thing is for sure though, there's some good stuff that is released regularly that we just haven't been able to play yet.

I have a Wii and as far as good games goes, I have not found many. The NHL 2009 is ok. The controls are a bit odd. Madden 09 is good, as is Tiger Woods Golf 09. Mario Kart, Wii Sports are both must haves...as is Galaxies, which I don't have yet.
Also, there are some great games, I do suggest getting a couple of Classic controllers, or Gamecube Wavebirds. With those you can download some great classic games like, Mario Kart 64, Punch Out, and Blades of Steel (my game of the decade 1980's).
I am working on Sonic Unleashed, but it is just ok.
The one thing I will absolutly stress, is rent it before you buy it. Games that seem like locks to own (ie. Force Unleashed and Web of Shadows) were good, but not must owns like I thought they were.
One last thought, while Chad is correct about the extra controller in the Wii Play, i personally don't thing it is worth buying. I didn't find any of the games in it fun at all. There is a great resource in Amazon and eBay that will allow you to get controllers and nunchucks cheap. Just do a search for seller World's Best Deals (same seller on both places). I bought a Wii Remote and got it home and it was pretty much DOA and they sent me a brand new one, no questions asked. I was very impressed.

I've been playing Wii all week while I was and the grandma-in-laws, and I have to say that Wii Fit is surprisingly a lot of fun. Since you are probably going to be focusing on games you can play with others (the Wii is excellent for that, fun family-style mini games), you will probably like Wii Fit. The balance games are fun, and watching people you know try out some of the odd movements or yoga poses is pretty fun, plus it actually makes decent use of the Miis.
Mario Galaxy is great, Smash Brothers is great if you liked the previous games, but you gotta have people who want to play it with you, Wario Ware is ok if you can rent it for a week/weekend or it is on sale for 10 dollars somewhere, and Boom Blox is a must.... actually, I still haven't given Chad back his copy, and I'd had it for months. Also, this is going to come out of no-where, but Super Monkey Ball for the Wii is actually pretty fun.
As for downloads, I can suggest World of Goo (i've played through it on the computer, it is worth it). I haven't had my wii hooked up to the net in a while, so I don't know what else is available, but there are lots of wii-ware games that apparently are pretty good.
If you ever wanna battle it out online, we can see if the wii network has gotten any better.

Oh, and I think I figured out why the Wii is popular and turning people like us all into losers... topic for the show if we ever do one again and my computer is ever not in for repairs.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
I picked up the Wiiplay with the extra remote when we bought the Wii. So far, I have only been through all the games a couple times, but I do not think I would have picked it up unless I got the extra remote. So far I downloaded Super Mario 3 and the Tournament Bags game from the Wii ware. We also rented Wii Ski and Wario: Shake it for the weekend and ended up playing the Shake game most of the time. The game we are playing most right now is Wii Sports which we are both enjoying a lot. Of couse now that Wil mentioned Blades of Steel, I am probably going to have to download that one.

So I got a chance to play Boom Blox this weekend, and that game is pretty cool. That is the first game beside Wii Sports that I feel I have to own.

As much as you mock the Wii, Nintendo owns everyone's asses right now because they release games that have a level of fun for pretty much everyone... Not quite the lowest common denominator (Pacman and Space Invaders), but safely above it.
